World Wide Web
  • Short form WWW.
  • Massive collection of interlinked  documents, images and other resources(standard and protocol)
  • Invented by Tim Berners Lee in 1989 
  • Pages are inter linked to other web pages using hyper links and URLs creating a great web of  information
Features of World wide web(WWW)
  • Provides the user facility of quick and easy way  to search for desired information
  • Was built on the concept for hyper text 
    • HTML pages are created 
    • Hyper links to HTML pages are created using special text called hyper links and URLs
    • These hyper links appears in different colours than normal text 
    • Hyper Text can link information within the same  page, another web page or another web site
  • Whenever client request for some page, the web server responds by sending the resource
  • Web Browser is used to access the web  
  • We can search, retrieve, download and surf any amount of information through any amount of sites
  • Helps people to 
    • Communicate with each other
    • Share information and resources
  • It can run on any operating system  You just need to have compatible browser

WWW Terminology:
  1. Web Server- Web server is:
    • a powerful computer where the HTML pages and other resources are stored.
    • Always active and connected to the internet.
    • Runs softwares designed to send out HTML pages and other file formats.
    • Based on client-server model.
      • web browser in our computers is a client that requests HTML files from web server
      • web server processes the request and sends the response back to the client computer
    • Server is usually much faster than commonly used computers
    • It manages and processes the request of multiple clients 
  2. Web Client :
    • Is the user side of the web 
    • Refers to the web browser in the user's machine
    • Client's side components are usually computer applications running on a user's computer and connected to the server
  3. Web Site :
    • A collection of related web pages
    • Has a unique address called URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
    • Web sites are hosted on web servers,  the process of storing websites on a web server is called "Hosting"
    • Web servers store thousands of individual web pages 
  4. HOME PAGE
    • first page of a website
    • while accessing a website we are directed to its home page or main page
    • It may be the only or the first page of the website.
  5. WEB PAGES
    • an electronic page usually written in HTML
    • contains information related to the specific topic
    • may contain text, images, graphics or hyperlinks.
    • WWW consists of a large collection of such interlinked web pages.
    • each page has a unique address, known as URL
    • Types of web pages-
      • Static-
        • cannot be changed by the user
        • these are read only pages and shows same information till the programer changes the source code.
        • these are simplest pages created using standard HTML tags
      • Dynamic-
        • interactive
        • can produce different content for different users according to their requirements.
        • uses other languages like PHP,JSP etc. along with HTML tags..
  6. WEB BROWSER
    • is a software application which enables a user to display and interact with text, images, sound and other information on the web pages.
    • client is known as a web browser.
    • Types-
      • Graphical Browsers- 
        • displays text, images,sound, and hyperlinks
        • accessed by pointing and clicking on them with a mouse.
        • Example- Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox etc.
      • Text Only Browsers-
        • does not support images and sound
        • purely text based
        • User can interact with application by making use of commands and only one task can run at a time.
        • Example- Lynx browser running on Unix Shell
  7. BLOGS
    • derived from the term Weblog
    • is a type of website usually maintained by an individual.
    • person who writes a blog is called blogger.
    • combines text, images and links to other blogs, webpages and other media.
    • types:-
      • personal
      • corporate
      • moblog
    • Example- Blogger.com
